Midwifery Care / Antenatal Care

Midwifery Care · Antenatal

Antenatal care with room for the whole of you

The bloods and the scans, and the woman at the centre of it.

I'm Jen. I order your tests, prescribe what you need, and leave room to think out loud and change your mind.

No referral needed. Come at five weeks with nothing sorted, or at thirty-five weeks with a decision you want to sit with.

If any of this sounds familiar

You've just found out you're pregnant, and already there are things to decide. Which tests, when, who looks after you. Nobody's really explained what any of it is for.

You've agreed to what was recommended, and you're still not entirely sure why.

You've heard your friends' birth stories and been told not to expect too much. You'd like to know whether birth is simply like that, or whether there's something you can do.

You've held questions back, and had no time to think about what any of it means for you.

You've seen a different person every visit, and you're not sure why the answers keep changing.

You've wondered whether you're being difficult.

None of that means your care is unsafe. Australia is a good place to have a baby, and the clinical care here is generally sound. But being physically safe and being properly looked after are two different things, and a lot of women only get the first one.

That gap is where I work.

What I can actually do

Midwives are the specialists in pregnancy, birth and the weeks after. For the majority of pregnancies, most of the time, midwifery is the whole of the care required.

As a Registered and Endorsed Midwife with Medicare provider status, I can be your primary antenatal carer. In practice that means:

Ordering and reviewing your investigations. All routine antenatal bloods, ultrasounds and screening, including first trimester screening. I order them, I read them, and I explain what they mean for you.

Prescribing. My endorsement is broad and covers the medicines used in midwifery care. If you need something prescribed related to your pregnancy, you won't usually need a separate GP appointment to get it.

Full antenatal assessment. Growth, position, blood pressure, fetal wellbeing, and everything else a routine visit covers, with time left over to talk about how you're going.

Collaborating and referring. I work alongside a range of medical and allied health practitioners, and bring them in as you need them. If you want or need to see an obstetrician or paediatrician as well as me, the referral I give you is recognised by Medicare, so you're paid the specialist rebate.

Referring isn't handing you over. If something needs specialist input, you get it, and I stay alongside you while it happens. Knowing who to bring in, and when, is part of midwifery. It's how care gets built around one woman.

Three ways this can look

As your first point of contact

From the moment you get a positive test. No waiting list, and no gatekeeping about which model you're allowed. Bloods, scans, screening, results, and a plan for the pregnancy ahead, while you work out where the rest of your care will happen.

Alongside the care you already have

Plenty of women see me while under a private obstetrician, another private midwife, or a public hospital booking. Their care is fine. There was simply never going to be enough time in it for the conversation you needed. Bring what you've been told, and we'll work through it together.

As your primary carer, through RPA Shared Care

If you're planning to birth at Royal Prince Alfred, I can hold the majority of your antenatal and postnatal care, with RPA's team attending the birth. Ask about RPA Shared Care →

You can also start in one and move to another. I can manage your pregnancy care for as long as you need, until you decide who or what comes next.

I'm not attending births at the moment, so whichever way you go, your birth care sits with your hospital, obstetrician or birth midwife.

What an appointment is like

Forty-five to ninety minutes, depending on what you've come for. Long enough that you won't feel rushed, and long enough that the question you were saving until last actually gets asked.

We'll start with where you are, and what you've already been told. If different people have given you different advice, bring all of it. A good part of what I do is working out where it contradicts itself, then giving you one clear picture to work from. Your options will include declining things, and I'll say so.

Not nearby? Every appointment here is available by video as well as in person. I see women online right across Australia, which matters if you're somewhere with one maternity service and no real choice about it, or if getting to an appointment is simply hard.

You'll leave knowing what happens next, and you'll have my details if something comes up before your next visit.

Informed, in control, and not pressured. That's the aim, whatever you decide.

Start with one, add as you need

Simple to start. Book directly and we go from there. Most women begin with an Initial Antenatal Consultation and add follow-ups as they need them. Every appointment can be in person or by video. Already partway through your pregnancy? That's completely fine. Book whenever you're ready.

You don't need to book a whole pregnancy of appointments. Plenty of women see me once, for a second opinion, for one particular question, or for a proper conversation before a decision. That's a complete way to use this practice, and it's a common one.

Fees and Medicare

Most appointments attract a Medicare rebate. You pay the full fee at your appointment, and I claim your rebate on the spot. It's usually in your account the next working day.

Appointment Length Fee Rebate in clinic Rebate by telehealth
Initial Antenatal Consultation 60 min $260 $75.65 $75.65
Long Antenatal Consultation 90 min $340 $113.45 $75.65
Antenatal Follow Up 45 min $185 $75.65 $75.65
Home visit travel fee $85

Note: Medicare has a single antenatal telehealth item, whatever the length of the appointment.

Clinic appointments are held at The Gathering Space, Paddington. Telehealth is available anywhere in Australia.

In the Blue Mountains I see women at home rather than in a clinic. Home visits are generally available across the eastern suburbs, inner Sydney, and the lower Blue Mountains. Email me to arrange in-home care.

Rebates shown are estimates. Yours may be higher once your family's Medicare Safety Net threshold is reached.

Ready to start?

Pregnancy, birth and early mothering hold a lot that can't be known or controlled. That's the nature of it, not a failure of planning.

What you should be able to count on is your voice at the centre of every decision. Understanding what's happening, knowing your real options, and being supported in what you choose.

That's what these appointments are for.

No referral needed. Book directly, or email me first if you're not sure what fits.
